Crossville, Tennessee - Minister’s Tree House
A minister, apparently, was “spoken to” and decided to build this 5-story tree house/church, which is quite a thing to behold. It’s totally open; Everything is made from scrap wood, so the corners are not precise, and there are some off-kilter stairs and weird angles throughout.
There’s a multi-story chapel with a stained glass window, a bell tower, and the view from the tower is great - including a field with JESUS written in flora. Weird and free.

I had no idea this existed. Must. Seek. Out. Don’t worry, I’ll tumble all about it.
I have got to go to this. Less than 2 hours from Nashville!
Here’s another crappy demo of a new song for you guys. It’s the second one I’ve written in the span of 4 days, so I’m enjoying the creative burst.
This is a folky, open-tuned song that reminds me a bit of David Mead’s style. I made this live recording in the back of my car after I finished writing it this afternoon. It was still pretty new to me and I might’ve played it a little fast, so consider this the first look of all first looks. Enjoy it and leave some thoughts.
Robert Gay - “Fishing”
I was feeling lonesome in a little fishing pond
Wading through the water with my boots & britches on
I was only biding time/Throwing out a line or two
Sudden movement made me turn/A glimmer caught my eye
Swimming in the shallow end and flickering with light
There was something hidden here, and it was clear what I must do
Close my mouth & bite my tongue/Fill my lungs & dive below
Close my eyes & listen/I am fishing for what I don’t know
Stories told of treasure drive a man to seek his own
And in this little fishing pond, a seed of hope was sown
A shine I’d never seen before/Evermore I’ll search the blue
Where are you hiding?
This is the first demo of a new song I wrote over the past 2 days. I recorded it outside with the crickets a few minutes ago and decided to put it on tumblr for you to hear.
Please listen, enjoy, and share some thoughts if you’d like.
Robert Gay - “When This Goes Bad”
love is nothing more than a closing open door
it’ll shut you out before you’re through
every time i start to fall, i make myself recall
it’s just what i don’t need, and what i dooh but youre the highest hope i’ve ever had
it’s gonna hurt when this goes badlove is like a song that carries you along
it’s in your heart but never in your hands
though i’ll never live without it,I know i’ll always doubt it
the melody that i can’t understandoh it’s everything that ever drove me mad
it’s passionate but just a passing fad
and you’re the highest hope i’ve ever had
it’s gonna hurt when this goes bad
For those of you who’ll be joining me at the Ryman tonight to see the Avett Brothers, I’ve just learned that we’re in for a real treat of an opening act.
One of my recent favorites, Nicole Atkins, is starting off the show, and I’m more than a little bit delighted to hear the news. Her songs are lush, expressive, and delicate, and she sings with the passion of Ray Orbison or Patsy Cline. I can’t wait to see how it all sounds live.
